Musandam Governorate Honored at Global IT Summit in Geneva: Implications for Technology Investment in Oman
Geneva
On July 11, Musandam Governorate was honored at the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS 2025) in Geneva, organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). The recognition was for an innovative project focused on developing smart street lighting systems using Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, praised as one of the best projects in terms of sustainability و feasibility.
The project garnered significant attention from the committee overseeing the WSIS competition, with judges considering it a practical model that can be replicated in various urban settings due to its technical innovation and alignment with sustainable development goals.
Amina bint Mohammed al-Shuhi, Director of the Information Technology Department at the Musandam Directorate of Administrative and Financial Affairs, explained that the project relies on an integrated technological framework. This includes installing sensors and smart devices in street lights to collect various data, such as natural light intensity, pedestrian and vehicle movement, weather conditions, and the devices’ operational status. This data is sent to a central operating platform for analysis, enabling automated decisions regarding turning the lights on or off and adjusting their intensity as needed to achieve optimal operational efficiency.
She noted that the intelligent system allows for real-time monitoring of the lighting network, facilitating early fault detection and immediate alerts to maintenance teams. This contributes to reduced response times and improved service levels for residents and visitors. Additionally, the platform generates analytical reports that can aid in planning and decision-making related to infrastructure.
She emphasized that the project represents a significant transformation on multiple fronts. Technically, it can reduce electricity consumption by up to 40% compared to traditional systems and extends the lifespan of light bulbs by operating them based solely on actual demand. Environmentally, it lowers the carbon footprint and supports Oman’s direction towards green development و smart cities. Administratively, the system enhances resource management efficiency and decreases long-term operating and maintenance costs.
She affirmed that this recognition marks a national achievement, enhancing Musandam’s reputation as a pioneer in utilizing technology for community service and sustainability, aligning with Oman’s Vision 2040, which prioritizes digital transformation and environmental sustainability.
ال World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) is one of the leading international initiatives in information and communication technology for development. Launched under the auspices of the الأمم المتحدة and managed by the ITU, it collaborates with various other UN organizations. The summit aims to foster digital innovation and encourage the implementation of technological projects contributing to global sustainable development goals (SDGs).
It’s noteworthy that this summit hosts the annual WSIS Prizes competition, a competitive platform that awards the best technological projects serving society in innovative and sustainable ways. The competition receives hundreds of submissions from around the world, including those from the government, private sector, civil society, and academic institutions, awarding excellence across 18 major categories, including digital infrastructure, environment and smart cities, e-government, disaster risk management, and innovation and entrepreneurship.
