Revolutionizing Renewable Energy: The Arrival of Turbines for Oman’s Largest Wind Farm Project and Its Impact on Investment Opportunities
Major Milestone Achieved for Oman’s Largest Wind Energy Project
The construction of the Riyah-1 and Riyah-2 wind farms, which constitute Oman’s largest wind-powered renewable energy initiative to date, has reached a significant milestone with the arrival of all 36 wind turbine generator (WTG) sets at their designated locations in the southern region of Petroleum Development Oman’s (PDO) Block 6 licence area.
These two wind farms are being developed by a joint venture of شركة OQ للطاقة البديلة (51%), a wholly owned subsidiary of OQ, and إجمالي الطاقات (49%). The renewable energy generated by the projects will be provided to PDO under long-term Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs).
Riyah-1 is located in Amin, Dhofar Governorate, while Riyah-2 is situated at Nimr West. Both sites feature identical setups, each equipped with 18 wind turbines that have a combined generation capacity of 234 MW.
Sami Al Mazidi, Executive Managing Director (Renewable Energy Projects) at the OQAE/TotalEnergies joint venture, expressed his enthusiasm regarding the successful unloading and transportation of the turbines: “I’m thrilled to announce a remarkable achievement — the successful and safe delivery of all 36 full WTG sets to both Riyah-1 and Riyah-2 sites. This milestone reflects the extraordinary collaboration and dedication of our stakeholders, shareholders, and team.”
Each WTG set is a complete wind turbine unit that transforms wind energy into electricity, encompassing rotor blades, a hub, a nacelle, a generator, control systems, and electrical systems.
Earlier, Ghassan Al Siyabi, Commercial Specialist (Breakbulk & Project Cargo) at the Port of Duqm, noted that the total cargo volume of the 36 wind turbines amounted to 300,000 freight revenue tonnes (FRT), highlighting the complexity of handling and transporting such substantial project cargo.
“I am proud to have contributed to the Riyah 1 & 2 wind projects through the Port of Duqm, facilitating the handling of complex project cargo from vessel discharge to onward delivery,” he remarked. “Such moments underscore the value created not only in operations but in coordinating stakeholders and executing solutions under pressure.”
Shipments of wind turbines for the two wind farms began arriving at the Port of Duqm last November. Each wind turbine stands nearly 200 metres tall and has the capacity to power approximately 2,400 homes.
According to OQ Alternative Energy, both Riyah-1 and Riyah-2 are on track for commercial operation by December 2026. Concurrently, the North Oman Solar Project, also under development by the OQAE/TotalEnergies joint venture, is expected to reach commercial operation in June 2026. This utility-scale solar project, with a capacity of 128 MWp (105 MWac), is nearing completion at Saih Nihayda in the northern part of PDO’s licence area.
