IndiGo Introduces New ‘Fuel Charge’: Implications for Omani Travelers and Airlines
IndiGo, India’s largest airline, will implement a fuel charge on both domestic and international flights starting March 14, 2026.
The charge will be 900 rupees for international flights to the Middle East, including Oman, while domestic flights within India will incur a charge of 420 rupees. IndiGo operates flights from multiple Indian cities to Muscat.
The airline stated that this decision is prompted by a significant rise in fuel prices due to ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. According to IATA’s Jet Fuel Monitor, fuel prices in the region have surged by over 85%.
Aviation Turbine Fuel constitutes a substantial portion of airline operating costs, and this sharp increase is expected to significantly impact the costs and operations of all airlines, including IndiGo. The airline emphasized that it has set a relatively modest fuel charge to minimize the burden on passengers.
Beginning at 12:01 AM on March 14, 2026, all new bookings on IndiGo flights will reflect the additional fuel charge per sector. IndiGo has indicated that it will continue to monitor the situation and adjust the charges as necessary.
In related news, Air India also announced a gradual introduction of fuel surcharges for both domestic and international flights. The surcharge for flights to the Middle East will be $10. However, Air India Express has confirmed it will not implement any fuel surcharge on its flights for the time being.
