Manah-1 Solar Project Set to Generate 1.5 Billion kWh Annually: Implications for Energy Investment in Oman

MUSCAT, AUGUST 16 – Shanghai Electric, a prominent player in renewable technology, has announced the successful completion of one month of operations at the 500MW Oman Manah-1 Solar IPP Project. This marks its first solar power plant in Oman, having passed all assessments and undergone final handover.

As the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractor for the project, Shanghai Electric will also serve as the long-term operations and maintenance (O&M) provider on behalf of Wadi Noor Solar Power Company SAOC. The project is jointly owned by EDF Renewables from France and Korea Western Power Co. Ltd (KOWEPO), each holding a 50% stake.

The Oman Manah-1 project aligns with the Oman Vision 2040 initiative aimed at promoting sustainability and clean energy. It is expected to generate 1.5 billion kWh of electricity annually, significantly reducing CO₂ emissions by 780,000 tonnes per year—equivalent to removing 170,000 gasoline-powered cars from Oman’s roads.

Shanghai Electric provided comprehensive solutions encompassing design, planning, procurement, construction, and long-term O&M. This integrated approach has not only enhanced efficiency but also contributed to advancements in global solar technology.

To navigate the policy and technical challenges, Shanghai Electric collaborated with EDF under a unique dual-track agreement, employing a "split-team" strategy. This involved Chinese engineers focusing on the solar field design while the local team managed substation construction, successfully aligning international standards with local regulations.

Hamood al Shuaili, the Project Director, remarked, "Shanghai Electric’s solution fundamentally transformed our expectations regarding the speed at which solar projects could connect to the grid. Their exceptional expertise and teamwork have set new standards in the industry."

Additionally, the project has positively impacted local employment and energy security while fostering social development. With a commitment to community engagement, 90% of the operations and maintenance staff are local hires. Moreover, technical training programs have been incorporated into Oman’s vocational education system, aimed at equipping workers with skills for future success.
