Immediate Suspension of Europe-Israel Partnership Agreement: Implications for Investors and Businesses in Oman

Madrid, July 11 – Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has called for an immediate suspension of the partnership agreement between the الاتحاد الأوروبي و إسرائيل, citing the alleged “genocide” committed by Israeli forces against civilians in the Gaza Strip.

Sánchez made this statement during a speech in the Spanish Parliament, where he strongly criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, describing the government’s actions as one of the “darkest chapters of the 21st century.”

He noted that Spain, along with أيرلندا, had requested an evaluation from the EU in February 2024 regarding Israel’s adherence to the partnership agreement, which mandates respect for حقوق الإنسان in its second article.

Additionally, a report from the EU’s foreign affairs and security policy representative, Kayra Kalas, dated June 23, concluded that there is “sufficient evidence” of Israel violating this clause.

Sánchez emphasized that the EU has yet to take any concrete steps against Israel in this matter, stating, “Those who violate the foundational principles of the EU and use hunger in Gaza as a weapon against a legitimate state cannot be a partner of the union.”

He added, “We cannot be partners in the greatest genocide of this century, whether through indifference, hesitation, or political calculations.”

It is worth noting that the partnership agreement between the EU and Israel was signed in Brussels on November 20, 1995, and came into effect on June 1, 2000, after being ratified by the parliaments of EU member states, the European Parliament، و Israeli Knesset.

The call for the suspension of the EU-Israel partnership agreement raises significant concerns for businesses in Oman, particularly those engaged in trade with Europe. This geopolitical shift may lead to economic uncertainties, impacting supply chains and investment flows. Smart investors should consider reallocating resources to sectors less affected by political tensions, while entrepreneurs could explore opportunities in humanitarian goods and services that address evolving market needs amidst global crises.
