E-Trucks Make Oman Debut at Sohar Port: What This Means for Sustainable Logistics and Business Efficiency
MUSCAT: In a pioneering move for Oman’s ports and maritime industry, Hutchison Ports Sohar, the operator of the Container Terminal at Sohar Port, has introduced a fleet of electric terminal trucks (eTTs). This development marks a significant step forward in the terminal’s ongoing efforts to decarbonise its operations.
The electric trucks, manufactured and supplied by Westwell—a Chinese company specializing in AI-driven autonomous and electric logistics vehicles—represent a new generation of zero-emission, intelligent equipment designed specifically for container handling in ports and logistics centers.
Hutchison Ports Sohar announced that the arrival and deployment of the 15 electric terminal trucks coincided with the celebration of Logistics Day on April 30, 2026. The introduction of these vehicles is intended to enhance service efficiency while supporting the terminal’s sustainable development initiatives.
The initial batch of eTTs aims to accelerate the transition to automated, low-carbon ‘smart’ port ecosystems by boosting operational efficiency, reducing labor intensity, and cutting emissions. Plans are underway to expand the fleet further and improve the terminal’s charging infrastructure and maintenance capabilities.
Notably, Sohar Port’s Container Terminal is the first maritime facility in Oman to operate electric terminal trucks, which play a crucial role in efficiently moving containers and heavy cargo within port and logistics areas.
Each electric truck features a high-capacity 282 kWh battery, offering a driving range of up to 150 kilometers. The vehicles support rapid charging and fully unmanned battery swapping, which can be completed in about five minutes to ensure continuous 24/7 operations.
Compared to conventional diesel trucks, the eTTs generate zero emissions and operate with minimal noise. They also enhance safety and driver comfort through advanced intelligent assistance systems and ergonomically designed cabins. Westwell’s electric terminal trucks are already in use across various international markets, including Thailand, Peru, Pakistan, and Egypt.
Aligned with its environmental goals, Hutchison Ports Sohar has already achieved 100% electrification of its fleet of quay cranes, empty container handlers, and reach stackers. The company aims to reduce Scope 1 carbon emissions by 90% by 2030 and achieve net carbon neutrality by 2050, in line with Oman’s national objectives.
Hutchison Ports Sohar is a joint venture involving Hutchison Ports—one of the world’s leading port investors, developers, and operators—Rakiza (Oman Infrastructure Investment Management), and other Omani investors.
