Construction of Muttrah Square Waterfront Landmark: Key Opportunities for Investors and Businesses in Oman
MUSCAT, JUNE 14 — Muscat Municipality has officially commenced construction on the Muttrah Square project, an award-winning waterfront development aimed at transforming the urban identity of the historic district and enhancing its appeal to visitors.
This week, the municipality announced the initiation of the building work, characterizing the project as a significant enhancement to the capital’s urban landscape. It aims to reinforce Muttrah’s spatial identity while celebrating its cultural and aesthetic character.
Muttrah Square secured first place in the inaugural Bilarab bin Haitham Award for Architectural Design in 2022, a competition designed for Omani architects, designers, and urban planners aged 35 and under. The design team comprises Ahmed al Jahdhami, Omaima al Hinai, and Abdullah al Bahri.
A key feature of the project is a striking pedestrian bridge inspired by the sword of Imam Al Salt bin Malik al Kharousi, designed to resemble a bird in flight. Located above the sea, opposite the Muttrah Fish Market, the bridge will showcase some of Muttrah’s most iconic sights while linking various aspects of the development.
Surrounding the bridge will be a multi-use plaza featuring a dancing water fountain, retail spaces, cafes, and lighting designed to reflect the natural rhythm of the waves. This initiative aims to create a vibrant public gathering space along the corniche.
The construction contract, valued at RO 8.959 million, encompasses site preparation, including earthworks and groundwater extraction, the construction of the pedestrian bridge, two commercial wings, fountain installation, rainwater drainage and core utilities, as well as landscaping and public amenities.
This project is being executed in accordance with Royal Directives from His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, instructing the municipality to advance the Muttrah Square initiative.
Upon completion, Muttrah Square is anticipated to emerge as a significant architectural and tourism landmark in the capital, complementing the redeveloped Muttrah Fish Market and corniche.

With its design aimed at enhancing the cultural and aesthetic appeal of the historic district, investors should seize the chance to engage with new commercial opportunities, capitalizing on the expected influx of visitors.
