Oman and Sudan Strengthen Ports Cooperation: What It Means for Investors and Trade Opportunities
Muscat: Oman and Sudan have agreed to enhance cooperation in ports, maritime transport, and logistics following high-level discussions and the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at boosting connectivity and supporting economic development.
Eng. Said bin Hamoud al Maawali, Oman’s Minister of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, met with Saif Al Nasr al Tijani, Sudan’s Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, who is currently visiting the Sultanate.
The two officials explored opportunities to expand collaboration in transport, port operations, and logistics services, with the goal of forging partnerships that benefit both nations’ economic interests.
During the meeting, Asyad Ports and Free Zones, a subsidiary of the Asyad Group, and Sudan’s Sea Ports Corporation signed the MoU. This agreement is designed to strengthen cooperation in port management, maritime transport, and logistics while supporting supply chain development and maritime integration between Oman and Sudan.
The MoU outlines cooperation areas including port planning, maritime infrastructure, and the exchange of technical and administrative expertise. It also includes provisions for joint training programs, workshops, and reciprocal visits to build institutional capacity and share operational knowledge.
A major focus of the partnership will be the digital transformation of the ports sector. Both parties agreed to explore the integration of advanced technologies and international best practices to enhance port efficiency and service quality.
Officials noted that the agreement establishes a framework for future joint projects and investment opportunities aimed at reinforcing maritime trade links and improving logistical connectivity between the two countries.
The MoU was signed by Omar bin Mahmoud al Mahrizi, Chief Executive Officer of Asyad Ports and Free Zones, on behalf of Oman, and Eng. Consultant Gilani Mohamed Gilani, Director-General of Sudan’s Sea Ports Corporation, on behalf of Sudan.
This initiative aligns with Oman’s broader strategy to expand international collaboration in the logistics and maritime sectors, which are pivotal to the Sultanate’s economic diversification efforts and its ambition to become a leading regional trade and logistics hub. — ONA
