Traffic Violations Among Youth: What Business Owners Need to Know to Mitigate Risks in Oman
MUSCAT: According to Brigadier Eng Ali bin Sulayem al Falahi, Director-General of Traffic at the Royal Oman Police (ROP), young individuals aged 18 to 35 represent the highest statistics for dangerous driving behaviors. These behaviors include speeding, failing to maintain a safe following distance, and making improper lane changes.
Al Falahi highlighted that such traffic violations, including tailgating and unsafe overtaking, pose significant risks to public safety and can lead to fatal road accidents. In response, the Directorate-General of Traffic has intensified patrols and monitoring efforts to address these violations.
The Director-General noted that traffic data shows this age group accounts for a significant portion of both traffic violations and accidents. Reckless driving behavior, particularly speeding and dangerous overtaking, is prevalent among these young motorists.
Al Falahi emphasized the importance of adhering to traffic laws, which is vital for ensuring orderly interactions between vehicles and pedestrians. This compliance helps reduce accidents and minimizes errors on the road. He underscored that traffic safety is a collective responsibility that requires cooperation across all segments of society. Ethical driving practices, such as respecting the rights of others, yielding when necessary, and exercising patience, are essential to safeguarding all road users.
The Directorate-General of Traffic, through its Traffic Safety Institutes Department, adopts a proactive awareness strategy across all governorates. This initiative focuses on instilling values of respect, responsibility, and discipline among road users. Various awareness programs aim to disseminate traffic safety concepts to targeted groups, including school students, government and private sector employees, and the general public. This comprehensive approach seeks to create a safer traffic environment for all.
