Advancements in Smart Technology for Road Safety: A Game-Changer for Oman’s Transportation Sector and Business Opportunities
Muscat: The Royal Oman Police (ROP) is implementing a sophisticated monitoring system utilizing cutting-edge technology to enhance traffic safety and analyze data proactively.
Brigadier Engineer Ali bin Sulayem al Falahi, Director-General of Traffic at ROP, emphasized that this system will adopt modern and effective techniques for monitoring traffic and enforcing laws, significantly influencing motorists’ behavior and reducing road accidents.
Regarding the technology employed to monitor traffic violations, he stated, “The Directorate-General of Traffic at the Royal Oman Police employs advanced monitoring systems and direct deterrence methods. This includes technical monitoring through sophisticated devices and smart cameras at traffic signals, all supported by artificial intelligence.”
These systems will monitor driver behaviors, such as the use of mobile phones and seatbelt compliance. Brigadier al Falahi noted that the most common violations include speeding, running red lights, not wearing seatbelts, and using mobile phones while driving. Repeated offenders will be closely monitored, with a traffic points system in place; points will be added for violations, leading to progressive legal consequences, including temporary license suspension, mandatory driving courses, vehicle impoundment, and even license cancellation.
The effectiveness of these technical systems is proven, as they accurately and consistently monitor violations. Operating around the clock, the cameras record incidents without human intervention, capturing images, locations, and timestamps, thus providing reliable documentation. Nonetheless, human oversight remains crucial in areas lacking electronic monitoring and in adapting to evolving traffic conditions.
Regarding future initiatives, Brigadier al Falahi shared that the ROP is exploring modern technological projects to enhance traffic control and improve road safety, inspired by successful models from advanced nations. Data analysis and artificial intelligence are already being employed to identify recurring accident patterns and tailor preventive measures accordingly. Furthermore, the ROP is collaborating with relevant authorities to update technical infrastructure and enhance monitoring tools in alignment with international road safety standards.
