Oman Intensifies Crackdown on Drug and Alcohol Trafficking
The Royal Oman Police (ROP) and other law enforcement agencies have intensified efforts to combat the trafficking of narcotic substances and alcoholic beverages, with significant operations reported recently.
Last week, the Coast Guard Police, in coordination with the Musandam Police, intercepted a vessel in Omani territorial waters. Onboard were three Iranian nationals found with a significant quantity of alcoholic beverages. Legal proceedings against these individuals are currently underway.
In a separate operation, the Coast Guard collaborated with the General Directorate for Combating Drugs and Psychotropic Substances. They successfully intercepted a smuggling boat from the Islamic Republic of Iran after it was tracked as it entered Omani waters. The crew, comprised of three Pakistani nationals, was apprehended off the coast of Quriyat Governorate while in possession of over 70 kilograms of hashish.
Additionally, the Coast Guard Police from Dhofar Governorate disrupted a smuggling attempt involving more than 550 kilograms of drugs. This operation involved three Yemeni nationals who illegally entered Omani waters via a fishing boat. Legal action against them is being processed.
In Suhar, authorities raided a residence used by expatriate workers, where they uncovered a stash of over 15,380 bottles and cans of alcoholic beverages. Two Indian nationals were arrested in connection with this case.
Finally, the General Directorate of Customs, in partnership with the General Directorate of Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Control, thwarted an attempt to smuggle 11.65 kilograms of marijuana through Salalah International Airport. The drugs were found concealed within the luggage of two Indian nationals.
As these operations demonstrate, Oman remains vigilant in its ongoing battle against drug and alcohol trafficking.
