Game Development Bootcamp: Boosting Future-Ready Digital Talent for Oman’s Business Landscape

MUSCAT: In a bid to enhance digital skills and promote economic diversification, the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MoTCIT) has launched a National Game Development Bootcamp in collaboration with Unity Technologies and Al-Nahda Training Institute. This initiative aims to nurture young Omani talent and is part of the country’s broader strategy to invest in emerging digital sectors.

Over the next six months, the bootcamp will train 50 Omani nationals in essential skills such as game programming, animation design, 3D modeling, and artificial intelligence—fundamental elements of today’s gaming industry.

Jalila bint Abdullah al Fannah al Arimi, Director of Future Skills Development at MoTCIT, highlighted the program’s practical approach at the launch event. She stated, "This bootcamp emphasizes practical application, providing participants with real-world experience in technology incubators, as they develop their own game projects. Our goal is to prepare them to establish competitive Omani start-ups in the rapidly advancing digital sector."

Al Arimi noted that this initiative signifies a sustained national commitment to digital transformation. "Investing in national digital talent is crucial for cultivating a sustainable digital economy. This project represents a tangible step toward that vision, opening doors for young Omanis to engage meaningfully in the global gaming landscape."

During the launch ceremony, Shaikh Humaid bin Juma al Shamsi, Chairman of Al-Nahda Training Institute, underscored the bootcamp’s strategic significance. "This landmark initiative aligns with our vision to empower Omani youth by equipping them with state-of-the-art digital skills, which are essential for thriving in advanced global economies," he remarked.

He further elaborated that the gaming industry has evolved into a knowledge-driven sector. "The video game industry is no longer just about entertainment; it encompasses a multi-faceted, knowledge-based ecosystem that involves programming, design, artificial intelligence, and creative artistry. This bootcamp provides a practical platform for young Omanis to engage in this vibrant and fast-growing global industry."

Zia Ul Islam, representing Unity Technologies in the Middle East, added that the program incorporates Unity’s real-time AI technology to develop a sustainable digital ecosystem in Oman. "Our aim is not only to enhance skill sets but also to foster job creation in the gaming and broader digital sectors through the growth of small- and medium-sized enterprises," he stated.

Ul Islam expressed optimism about the program’s future growth, stating, "This is just the beginning. We envision creating something much larger in partnership with national institutions and ministries across Oman to accelerate the development of the local digital economy."

The bootcamp marks a pivotal step in Oman’s efforts to embrace digital innovation and prepare its youth for active participation in thriving global industries.
