Suwaiq Port Cargo Volume Approaches 400K Tonnes in H1 2025: Implications for Investment Opportunities in Oman

Significant Growth for Suwaiq Port in First Half of 2025

Al Suwaiq: Suwaiq Port in the Al Batinah North Governorate experienced considerable growth in cargo traffic during the first half of 2025, handling 399,615 tonnes—an increase from 374,168 tonnes in the same period last year.

The port also welcomed 429 vessels, up from 408 in the first half of 2024. However, the volume of dry bulk cargo saw a decline, dropping to 243,359 tonnes from 286,278 tonnes the previous year. Conversely, the handling of foodstuffs, including vegetables, fruits, and other consumer goods, rose to 54,401 tonnes, up from 47,291 tonnes in the same timeframe of 2024.

Engineer Samir bin Ghulam Al Balushi, Director of Suwaiq Port, attributed the overall increase in traffic to operational improvements at the facility. He noted enhancements in unloading and loading efficiencies, upgraded handling procedures, and the introduction of modern cargo equipment, such as high-capacity cranes, which have contributed to faster throughput.

Al Balushi emphasized that key commodities handled at the port include food, vegetables, fruits, livestock, construction materials, machinery, and general cargo.

Current development works aim to further enhance operational efficiency. These include the reorganization of internal yards, security and inspection system upgrades, and improvements to electronic operating platforms. Al Balushi confirmed that preliminary studies for the port’s expansion project are nearing completion, with administrative processes currently being finalized to initiate implementation. This project is designed to align with Suwaiq Port’s growth trajectory and meet future demand.

Suwaiq Port is equipped to handle small and medium-sized vessels with capacities of up to 10,000 tonnes. Strategically located between Muscat and Suhar and in close proximity to Khazaen Dry Port, it serves as a vital logistics corridor for regional trade and distribution.

The port facilitates the movement of goods and food products to local and regional markets, as well as to international markets in the Indian subcontinent and the Horn of Africa.

Through its ports and free zones, Asyad Group continues to enhance Suwaiq Port’s capabilities, improve service quality, and boost marketing efforts both locally and internationally. These initiatives are part of the group’s broader strategy to provide integrated logistics solutions and integrate Al Suwaiq into the national and global logistics network, in line with the goals of Oman Vision 2040. — ONA

The growth in cargo traffic at Suwaiq Port signals a robust logistical environment, presenting significant opportunities for businesses involved in trade and distribution, particularly in food and agricultural sectors. Investors should consider the ongoing expansion plans and operational upgrades, which could enhance competitive advantages and drive regional connectivity. However, the decline in dry bulk cargo volume suggests a potential risk, necessitating a strategic focus on diversifying cargo types and optimizing supply chains.
