Cultural Insights from Duqm Series Finale: Unlocking Performance Potential for Your Business Success in Oman

Duqm Summer Series Concludes with Focus on Wellbeing and Performance

AL DUQM, AUG 26: The Duqm Summer Series, a four-part program addressing key themes such as artificial intelligence, automation, workforce development, global trade, supply chains, corporate culture, and wellbeing, wrapped up on Tuesday. The final session was conducted by Dr. Aziza al Sawafi, Assistant Professor of Mental Health Nursing and Head of the Department of Mental Health at Sultan Qaboos University’s College of Nursing. She emphasized that wellbeing should not be viewed as a luxury; instead, it is fundamental to the effective functioning of organizations.

Dr. al Sawafi outlined a practical approach to enhancing wellbeing that translates into improved performance. Her framework begins with short pulse surveys aimed at assessing workload, role clarity, and inclusion. The results are shared to inform employees about upcoming changes. Managers who are closest to the operation are coached to eliminate obstacles, and team structures are adjusted during high-pressure periods. Progress is then monitored against existing metrics such as retention, productivity, and safety. “Wellbeing isn’t an add-on,” she stated. “Measure what matters, address the frictions, and performance will follow.” Neglecting mental wellbeing can lead to significant financial repercussions. The World Health Organization and the International Labour Organization estimate that depression and anxiety result in approximately 12 billion lost working days annually, with a global productivity cost nearing $1 trillion due to absenteeism and presenteeism. In essence, disregarding mental health undermines both performance and profitability.

Furthermore, global studies indicate substantial benefits from effective mental health support. Every dollar invested can yield about $4 in improved health and productivity, while Gallup research correlates highly engaged teams with a 23% increase in profitability, alongside reductions in absences and errors. This can lead to more consistent service delivery, safer work environments, and timely project completions.

Reflecting on the program’s results, Eng. Ahmed Akaak, CEO of SEZAD, remarked, “I am satisfied with what the Duqm Summer Series has achieved. We transformed complex topics into actionable steps that our tenants can implement immediately. The thread running through all four sessions was straightforward: address real issues, monitor the outcomes, and replicate successful strategies. That is how companies enhance performance, manage risks, and build increasingly resilient teams.”
