Silica Sand Production Launch in Mahout: Key Opportunities for Investment and Business Growth in Oman
Muscat: Minerals Development Oman (MDO), in partnership with the Earth Sciences Consultancy Centre, has officially launched production at the Silica Sand Project situated in the Wilayat of Mahout, Al Wusta Governorate, within exploration block F51.
This significant milestone aims to bolster Oman’s mining sector and enhance the capabilities of downstream industries in the Sultanate. The project encompasses approximately 5 square kilometres and boasts confirmed silica sand reserves estimated at around 47 million tonnes. The initial focus will be on producing and supplying raw silica to local and regional markets, aiming to meet increasing demand while decreasing import dependency. This initiative positions Oman as a dependable regional supplier of this vital industrial mineral.
MDO’s strategic approach includes fostering partnerships with the private sector, harnessing national mineral resources, and promoting value chain integration. Future developments will involve establishing a primary silica processing facility to improve product quality and attract high-tech industries, including semiconductors, glass manufacturing, chemical processing, and metallurgical applications. These initiatives are expected to contribute to sustainable local value chains and facilitate advanced industrial growth in Oman.
The Earth Sciences Consultancy Centre will oversee the operational and developmental components of the project, including investment and production management. MDO will act as the resource owner and overall project supervisor. According to the approved development plan, initial production capacity is projected to reach 100,000 tonnes annually, with a purity level of around 98%.
