Amazon’s AWS Cloud Unit Surges Due to AI Boom: Key Implications for Investors and Entrepreneurs
Amazon Shares Surge Following Positive AWS Growth and Sales Outlook
Amazon’s stock experienced a significant increase of over 13 percent in premarket trading on Friday. This surge was bolstered by impressive growth in its cloud services division and a positive sales forecast, which alleviated concerns that the tech giant was lagging behind competitors in the artificial intelligence sector.
In the third quarter, revenue from Amazon Web Services (AWS), a key area for the company’s AI investments, rose by 20 percent. Although Microsoft Azure saw a more substantial revenue increase of 40 percent and Google Cloud reported a 34 percent rise, AWS’s substantial market presence enhances the significance of its growth. With revenue totaling $33 billion, AWS generates more than double the revenue of Google Cloud, which stands at $15.16 billion.
The favorable earnings from AWS sparked enthusiasm on Wall Street, with analysts identifying this as a possible turning point for Amazon. Jed Ellerbroek, portfolio manager at Argent Capital, commented, “Concerns about AWS losing market share to Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud were prominent. However, AWS is now on track and experiencing significant revenue growth.”
Ellerbroek also noted that while investors anticipated a boost from AWS in the fourth quarter or early next year, this growth has already materialized this quarter.
Prior to Friday’s stock increase, Amazon shares had gained only 1.6 percent this year due to concerns about market share and limited updates in AI advancements, making it the weakest performer among the "Magnificent Seven" tech giants.
If the premarket gains persist, Amazon could surpass both Tesla and Apple in market standings. Tesla shares have risen approximately 9 percent this year, while Apple has seen an increase of around 8 percent, with both stocks experiencing less than a 2 percent rise in premarket trading.
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy stated on Thursday that AWS is "growing at a pace we haven’t seen since 2022" due to strong demand for AI services and core infrastructure. — Reuters
