Oman Launches First ‘Women in LPG’ Chapter: How This Initiative Empowers Women Entrepreneurs in the Energy Sector

MUSCAT: Oman has proudly inaugurated the first Women in LPG (WINLPG) National Chapter in the Middle East, a significant step forward for women’s empowerment within the energy sector.

This announcement was made at the opening of the Middle East LPG Summit and Exhibition 2025, held at the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre and graced by Qais bin Mohammed al Yousef, Minister of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion. The event was organized by the World Liquid Gas Association (WLGA) in collaboration with the Ministry, serving as the backdrop for this pivotal initiative.

The establishment of the chapter positions Oman as a regional frontrunner in enhancing women’s roles in the liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) industry. It underscores the nation’s commitment to fostering diversity, inclusion, and talent development across the broader energy landscape.

WINLPG, founded by the WLGA a decade ago, aims to amplify women’s participation throughout the LPG value chain. The network has evolved into a community of over 4,000 members across nearly 15 national chapters, offering mentorship, leadership development, skills training, and professional collaboration. Designed as a neutral platform, WINLPG facilitates the sharing of experiences and success stories, helping to confront common challenges and thereby contributing to a more diverse and resilient global LPG sector. Its launch in Oman is a vital move to extend these opportunities to women in the Middle East.

Alison Abbott, Co-Founder of WINLPG and WLGA Communications Director, emphasized the importance of national chapters in tailoring initiatives to specific national contexts.

“What is needed in Oman may differ significantly from the requirements in Nigeria, the US, South Africa, or India. National chapters allow for a more focused approach,” she explained.

Abbott noted that WINLPG was developed in response to the evident lack of female representation in the industry. “We established Women in LPG ten years ago because we recognized the scarcity of women in our sector — and women are beneficial for business. It’s not merely a matter of fairness; there are tangible business advantages.”

She highlighted the importance of Oman hosting the region’s first national chapter, stating, “This is a landmark achievement for us. We will collaborate with the local team to develop initiatives, which may begin with an annual gathering of women.”

Moreover, Abbott pointed out that WINLPG creates a unique neutral environment, promoting dialogue among women from competing companies. “By bringing together women from different firms, we can foster a supportive network and reduce the risk of them leaving the industry due to dissatisfaction.”

Abbott expressed strong optimism regarding the future of the new chapter. “I have been heartened by the number of women present here. They are clearly respected and have a voice, which bodes well for our initiatives.”

She also underscored the need for male support to ensure the success of such programs. “The backing of men is crucial. Without it, we cannot thrive.”
