Maintenance of Sur Al Hilal Wall in Al Suwaiq Complete: What It Means for Local Business Opportunities and Investment in Oman

Al Suwaiq: The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism has successfully completed the restoration of the historic “Sur Al Hilal” boundary wall located in the Wilayat of Al Suwaiq, North Al Batinah Governorate. This project also included the meticulous repair of the adjacent defensive towers and internal corridors, as part of the Ministry’s ongoing efforts to preserve historical sites across various regions of the Sultanate of Oman.

Khalifa Al Wahaibi, Head of the Restoration and Maintenance Section at the Directorate General of Antiquities, emphasized that the “Sur Al Hilal” wall is a significant historical landmark within Al Suwaiq. The fortification is believed to have been constructed around 1845. The restoration project was completed at a cost of RO186,822.

Eng. Khalsa Khalifa Al Salmia, Director of the Department of Restoration and Maintenance, highlighted the Ministry’s strong commitment to safeguarding archaeological sites throughout Oman. She noted that the “Sur Al Hilal” wall is a key initiative aimed at enhancing the cultural and historical value of heritage landmarks while promoting sustainable tourism development in the region.

The “Sur Al Hilal” wall stands as a testament to the rich history of Al Suwaiq and reflects the Wilayat’s commercial significance in the early twentieth century. Historically, the site functioned as a hub for trading local goods and products. It continues to preserve its unique architectural identity, symbolizing defense and showcasing the craftsmanship of traditional Omani builders.
