Unveiling the Musandam International Diving Festival: What It Means for Tourism Investment Opportunities in Oman
First International Musandam Diving Festival Announced
On July 9, the Musandam Governor’s Office held a press conference in Khasab to announce the first edition of the International Musandam Diving Festival, scheduled to take place from August 25 to 28. This event aims to promote environmental and marine tourism during the summer season through a sustainable initiative that attracts divers, tourists, and investors from around the globe.
The festival will feature a variety of activities and competitions in Khasab, along with events in Khamzar and Dibba. Notable highlights include a clean-up campaign of the sea depths, the “Free Diving Champion” challenge, an underwater photography contest, a kayaking race, and a competition for the best video showcasing marine life. Additionally, there will be accompanying events such as an exhibition of photos and videos from Musandam’s underwater environment, collective diving trips to key sites, short film screenings about marine life, a marine market selling seafood products and diving gear, and a specialized diving conference aimed at forming an Oman Diving Federation.
The festival will also host workshops and specialized seminars, including an environmental workshop for coral reef protection, a discussion on the future of diving in the Gulf, and a certified training session conducted by PADI. There will be informational sessions on investment opportunities in diving tourism in Musandam, as well as beginner scuba diving classes.
His Excellency Ibrahim bin Said Al Busaidi, the Musandam Governor, emphasized during the conference that the festival, organized in collaboration with the Musandam Diving Exploration Center, will serve as a global platform for professional and amateur divers, adventure enthusiasts, tourism media, diving companies, equipment suppliers, eco-tourists, and local visitors.
He further noted that the festival aims to position Musandam as a premier destination for diving enthusiasts and experts, highlighting the region’s unique marine biodiversity while supporting local tourism centers and diving projects. This initiative is expected to create economic opportunities for the local community.
Al Busaidi remarked that Musandam’s waters represent a strategic meeting point between the Arabian Gulf and the Indian Ocean, providing a unique marine ecosystem that supports a rich biological diversity, making it an ideal destination for divers of all levels. The region boasts exceptional dive sites with warm, clear waters, offering amazing visibility year-round, which makes the diving experience truly remarkable.
He added that diving tourism will be a significant driver for the local economy, attracting a niche market keen on nature and unique experiences. The development of tourism infrastructure will lead to increased numbers of divers, creating a need for professional dive centers, hotels, restaurants, and specialized transportation services, thus contributing to local economic growth. The diving industry also provides numerous job opportunities, including guides, instructors, boat operators, and hospitality staff, which supports local communities.
Additionally, Al Busaidi stressed the importance of international marketing for Musandam as a global diving destination. This will be achieved through visuals captured by divers, enhancing the region’s position on the international tourism map.
He emphasized that the preservation of the marine environment is crucial for ensuring Musandam’s ongoing appeal as a diving destination, highlighting the need for sustainable practices. This includes raising environmental awareness among divers, encouraging participation in underwater clean-up campaigns, monitoring coral reefs, and ensuring diving centers comply with eco-friendly practices. Collaboration with local communities, including involving local fishermen and village residents in conservation efforts, as well as providing training opportunities for them to become dive guides or instructors, will further support marine biodiversity and its economic benefits.
Badr bin Mohammed Al Shuhi, owner of the Musandam Diving Exploration Center, stated that hosting the International Musandam Diving Festival locally marks a transformative milestone, especially with the presence of notable figures in the diving industry. He concluded by reaffirming the center’s commitment to making the festival a success and showcasing the beauty of Musandam’s marine environment in the best possible light.

The inaugural Mussandam International Diving Festival not only enhances Oman’s appeal as a premier eco-tourism destination, but also opens up significant opportunities for local businesses involved in hospitality, diving equipment, and marine tourism. Smart investors should consider leveraging this trend by developing sustainable tourist infrastructures and services, as demand is likely to surge among documented diving enthusiasts and adventure travelers, thereby boosting local economies. However, companies must navigate the risks associated with environmental preservation, ensuring that growth does not compromise Mussandam’s unique marine ecosystems.
