UN Warns of Escalating Humanitarian Crisis in Sudan: Implications for Investors and Businesses in the Region

The United Nations reaffirmed the importance of ensuring the safe and unhindered access of humanitarian aid throughout Sudan, urging the international community to intensify its support for the most vulnerable populations in the country.

In a statement today, Stephane Dujarric, the spokesperson for the UN, condemned the attack that targeted a market in the Abu Shouk displacement camp in North Darfur yesterday, which resulted in the deaths of three civilians and injuries to others. Dujarric described the incident as a “tragedy,” highlighting the continued toll on civilians due to ongoing conflict.

The humanitarian situation in Sudan is deteriorating rapidly, particularly in the Kordofan region, where rising violence is forcing more people to flee to areas lacking essential aid and services. He warned of the severe shortage of medical supplies in Darfur.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has expressed concern over the situation in North Darfur, where ongoing fighting continues to displace families from their homes.

Since April 2023, armed conflict has persisted in Sudan between the Army and the Rapid Support Forces, leading to over 20,000 deaths and the displacement of nearly 14 million individuals, according to local and international reports.
