Jewellery Theft by European Tourists: Implications for Oman’s Tourism Sector and Investor Confidence

Muscat: The Royal Oman Police have apprehended two European tourists in the Muscat Governorate linked to an organized jewellery theft valued at approximately one million Omani rials.

Officials report that the suspects entered Oman on tourist visas and stayed at a hotel near jewellery stores in the Al Ghubrah area, where they conducted reconnaissance and devised their plan. At around 4:00 a.m., they allegedly breached the rear wall of a jewellery store using a mechanical demolition tool. During the incident, they made off with significant quantities of jewellery, forcibly opening a safe to take the cash inside.

Investigation efforts by the Police Command in Muscat Governorate, in collaboration with the Directorate General of Inquiries and Criminal Investigation, led to the suspects’ capture. Authorities successfully seized the tools used in the break-in and recovered the stolen jewellery, which had been hidden on a beach in the Seifa area after being transported by a rented boat under the pretense of a leisure trip.

The Royal Oman Police have confirmed that legal proceedings against the suspects are currently underway.
