UN Report: How Climate Change Poses Increased Risks for Elderly Populations and What Businesses Need to Know
On July 10, a report released by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) highlights that older adults are the most at risk from the consequences of climate change.
Inger Andersen, the Executive Director of UNEP, stated, “Heatwaves are among the most widespread and deadly impacts of climate change, alongside flooding and the retreat of ice cover.” She emphasized the need to be prepared for the risks arising from these effects, particularly for the most vulnerable groups in society, including seniors.
The report indicates that the number of annual deaths related to heatwaves among older adults has increased by approximately 85% since the 1990s.
It is noted that elderly individuals—especially those with chronic illnesses or limited mobility—are particularly susceptible to health issues linked to heat, which include respiratory, cardiovascular, and metabolic diseases.

The recent UNEP report underscores the urgent need for businesses in Oman to integrate climate resilience into their operations, particularly as the elderly population faces escalating health risks due to climate-related phenomena. This presents opportunities for sectors like healthcare and technology to develop solutions tailored for vulnerable demographics. Moreover, investors and entrepreneurs should prioritize sustainability and innovation to mitigate risks associated with climate impacts, ensuring long-term viability in a changing environment.
