Oman’s Water Majlis 2025: What the Focus on Water Security Means for Investors and Entrepreneurs
Water Majlis 2025: Paving the Way for Oman’s Water Security
MUSCAT, DEC 15 — The Water Majlis 2025, organized by the Oman German Friendship Association (OGFA), convened senior decision-makers, technical experts, and leaders from the private sector to foster dialogue on Oman’s long-term water security and translate cooperation into actionable outcomes. Under the patronage of HH Sayyid Tarik bin Shabib al Said, Chairman of OGFA, the event took place in Muscat as part of Oman Water Week, in collaboration with Nama Water Services and with support from the German Water Partnership and IntercityHotel Muscat.
This forum provided a platform for public-private discussions centered on strategic investments, technology transfer, and innovation in the water sector, particularly crucial as Oman faces rising demand, climate challenges, and the need for enhanced infrastructure. Key topics included minimizing non-revenue water, pipeline rehabilitation, treated effluent reuse, and implementing digital and AI-powered solutions to boost system performance.
In his opening remarks, HH Sayyid Tarik emphasized the essential nature of water, stating it is “a resource that shapes every nation’s destiny.” He encouraged participants to consider long-term strategies, noting that “water is both a challenge and an opportunity.” Regions that manage this resource effectively, he stated, can become "centres of stability, innovation, and cooperation," setting a constructive tone for discussions focused on long-term planning, resilience, and partnership.
Referring to Oman’s rich heritage, the OGFA Chairman highlighted the aflaj irrigation system as a testament to stewardship and fairness, while citing recent developments in desalination and infrastructure investments as examples of how scientific advancement can tackle scarcity. He reiterated that Oman Vision 2040 outlines a framework for sustainable growth, placing the water sector at the forefront of economic and social development.
HH Sayyid Tarik also acknowledged the significant role of Nama Water Services in transforming the national water landscape through sustained capital investment initiatives. “This is sustainability translated into daily decision-making,” he observed, emphasizing that success hinges on collaboration across various sectors and borders. He recognized Germany as a reliable partner known for its technological excellence in the water sector.
Beyond presentations, participants identified the true value of the Water Majlis in forging connections that could lead to tangible projects. A notable outcome was the proposal to form a dedicated water task force aimed at advancing German-Omani cooperation, focused on converting dialogue into pilot projects, joint research, capacity-building efforts, and investment prospects.
The themes of innovation and human capital also emerged prominently. HH Sayyid Tarik referred to Oman’s young engineers and scientists as “the country’s most powerful renewable resource,” asserting that merging local expertise with international insights can yield solutions that are both contextually relevant and globally applicable. He called upon stakeholders to prioritize not only technology but also the cultivation of talent and skills for future demands.
As the Majlis concluded, the OGFA Chairman urged participants to transition from conversation to action. “Progress emerges not in isolation, but through collective effort,” he remarked, expressing optimism that Water Majlis 2025 would engender lasting partnerships and transformative innovations to secure a sustainable water future for Oman and beyond.
By uniting government bodies, utilities, technology providers, and investors, the Water Majlis reinforced Oman’s commitment to water security as a strategic national priority, while also highlighting international cooperation as a vital enabler of resilience, efficiency, and long-term sustainability.
