Metrology Lab Designation in Oman: Key Changes and What They Mean for Industry Investors and Business Owners
MUSCAT: The Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion (MoCIIP), through its Directorate General for Standards and Metrology (DGSM), collaborated with the GCC Standardisation Organisation to hold a workshop on Tuesday focused on the designation of measurement and calibration laboratories.
The event gathered key stakeholders from the industrial, health, service, and regulatory sectors, underscoring MoCIIP’s commitment to strengthening national partnerships and advancing Oman’s metrology infrastructure.
Imad bin Khamis al Shukaili, Director General of DGSM, explained that the workshop aimed to clarify the roles and responsibilities of Designated Institutes (DIs) and their services in disseminating international units of measurement. He highlighted notable achievements in 2025, including the calibration of 970 devices and instruments by the National Calibration Centre, along with the verification of over 2,300 scales and liquid fuel pumps, which generated revenues of RO 16,500.
Al Shukaili emphasized that the workshop marks an important step in enhancing national technical capabilities and optimizing available resources to support economic development. These advancements contribute to improving the competitiveness of Omani products and services in regional and international markets while safeguarding consumers and ensuring measurement accuracy in line with global standards.
The discussions centered on governance frameworks and mechanisms for designating measurement and calibration laboratories under international mutual recognition agreements, especially the CIPM Mutual Recognition Arrangement (MRA). This initiative strengthens Oman’s integration into the global metrology system and elevates its position in this essential sector.
This workshop is part of the ongoing implementation of Measurement and Calibration Law No. 17/2013 and the activation of the National Calibration Centre’s role within DGSM in realizing the International System of Units (SI). These efforts aim to establish a reliable, internationally recognized national metrology infrastructure, bolstering confidence in Oman’s measurement systems in global markets. — ONA
