Muscat: Tragedy struck in the Wilayat of Muttrah when a tourist boat capsized, resulting in the deaths of three French tourists and minor injuries to two others, authorities reported on Tuesday.
The boat was en route from Marina Bandar al Rowdha to the Damaniyat Islands, located near the Seeb area of Muscat, when the incident occurred around 9 AM.
Witnesses indicated that some passengers were rescued by a passing vessel returning to Marina Bandar al Rowdha. One operator mentioned that although sea conditions had generally been rough recently, the weather deteriorated unexpectedly.
At the time of the accident, the boat was carrying 25 French tourists, a tour guide, and the captain. Rescue and ambulance teams from the Civil Defence and Ambulance Authority swiftly responded to the scene. According to officials, three tourists were pronounced dead at the site, while the two injured individuals received on-site treatment. The remaining passengers were reported to be safe.
The Civil Defence and Ambulance Authority has launched an investigation to ascertain the circumstances that led to the capsizing.
