Madayn-be’ah Pact: A Boost for Industrial Waste Management and Sustainable Business Growth in Oman
MUSCAT: The Public Establishment for Industrial Estates (Madayn) has signed a cooperation agreement with Oman Environmental Services Holding Company (be’ah) to improve the management, treatment, and regulation of industrial waste in Oman’s industrial cities. This initiative aligns with the nation’s priorities for sustainability and environmental protection.
The programme sets a comprehensive framework to oversee the handling of industrial and hazardous waste produced by manufacturing units within Madayn’s industrial estates. It aims to develop an integrated waste-management system that adheres to established environmental standards, enhances recycling rates, strengthens waste tracking, and reduces landfill disposal.
Officials highlighted that this initiative underscores the increasing focus on mitigating the environmental impact of industrial expansion and the necessity of structured systems to promote responsible production and resource efficiency. By bolstering monitoring capabilities and introducing advanced treatment processes, the programme supports Oman’s industrial sector transition towards a circular economy.
Under the agreement, companies operating in the industrial cities will be registered in be’ah’s electronic waste-management system and will be required to implement the “Manifest System” before transporting waste to treatment centers. The programme also includes organizing waste transportation routes and ensuring proper sorting, classification, and repackaging of waste in line with approved technical and environmental standards prior to disposal or recycling.
As part of this cooperation, be’ah will provide specialized technical support in evaluating and categorizing industrial waste streams, determining appropriate treatment techniques and associated costs, and supplying transparent data on waste quantities received at treatment facilities. The agreement also allows joint inspections by Madayn and be’ah to ensure compliance with local and international environmental regulations regarding waste disposal and industrial emissions.
Beyond enhancing operations, the programme incorporates awareness and training efforts to promote sustainable practices among investors, factory operators, and employees within industrial cities. By reinforcing environmental governance, encouraging recycling, and upgrading waste-treatment infrastructure, the partnership aims to substantially reduce the environmental impact of manufacturing activities while supporting Oman’s broader goals for sustainable development and industrial growth.
