Netflix Backs Out of Warner Bros Bid: What This Means for Streaming Competition and Investment Opportunities
NEW YORK – Netflix has announced it will not increase its takeover bid for Warner Bros. Discovery, effectively conceding the media giant to a rival offer from Paramount Skydance. The decision came after Netflix determined that the deal was no longer financially attractive.
Co-CEOs Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters stated they were “declining to match” Paramount Skydance’s latest proposal, which Warner Bros. Discovery’s board has officially recognized as a “Superior Proposal” under the terms of its existing merger agreement with Netflix.
This development is set to place the historic Hollywood studio, along with its extensive portfolio of TV assets—including CNN—under Paramount’s ownership, significantly altering the landscape of the US media industry.
With no counteroffer from Netflix, Warner Bros. Discovery’s board is now authorized to terminate its agreement with Netflix and move forward with the Paramount deal.
The enhanced bid from Paramount, submitted on Monday, marked the latest phase of a bidding war that has attracted attention even from the White House, where former President Donald Trump claimed to have influence over the outcome.
Paramount’s revised offer values Warner Bros. Discovery at approximately $108 billion, with a cash purchase price of $31.00 per share—a $1 increase from its previous bid. — AFP
