Boosting Oman’s Hospitality Sector: How Domestic Demand and Foreign Investment Can Benefit Your Business
MUSCAT, MAR 8 — The hospitality sector in Oman is exhibiting robust resilience, with domestic tourism playing a crucial role in maintaining occupancy rates, while increasing international interest, particularly from Europe, contributes to a positive outlook for resorts and hotels. This insight comes from Omar Emteir, investor and chief executive of Roushan Resort in the Wilayat of Mirbat, Dhofar Governorate.
Emteir noted that domestic travelers are the primary source of demand, especially during weekends, public holidays, and the winter season. During peak times, weekend occupancy typically ranges from 80 to 95 percent, and seafront resorts often reach full capacity.
These domestic travelers generally opt for one- to two-night stays and are highly influenced by promotional offers. Many prefer rooms with sea views and often choose room-only packages, indicating a preference for quick seaside getaways rather than extended, bundled vacations.
Roushan Resort, a beachfront boutique property in Mirbat, features around 22 sea-oriented bungalows set around two outdoor pools, offering direct beach access and proximity to coral reefs. Under new management since its renovation in 2025, the resort provides a variety of accommodations including sea-view bungalows and hostel-style rooms, along with amenities such as a restaurant and a dive center.
Over the past six months, international arrivals have gained momentum, with increasing interest from countries like Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, France, Russia, and India. Foreign guests typically stay longer—ranging from three to 14 nights—and often extend their visits if they enjoy their experience.
Emteir mentioned that international visitors focus more on value than price alone. They consider factors such as hotel ratings on online travel platforms, cleanliness, facilities, and location. Meal-inclusive options, particularly breakfast and half-board packages, are especially popular among these travelers.
Location plays a significant role in booking decisions. Seaside hotels and properties with direct beach access continue to enjoy high demand, especially during the winter season when Oman’s climate appeals to European tourists. Emteir described Oman as increasingly recognized as a preferred winter destination.
Occupancy trends show a predictable pattern, with the highest demand on weekends and public holidays. Weekday occupancy typically ranges from 50 to 70 percent, influenced by seasonal factors and overall market conditions. Emteir highlighted the impact of the salary cycle in Oman, noting that the week following salary disbursement often sees a spike in weekend bookings.
Regarding market sentiment, Emteir expressed cautious optimism. He acknowledged that global geopolitical issues can temporarily inhibit new bookings, especially among organized European travel groups seeking clarity on cancellation policies and safety. However, he emphasized that such responses are generally short-term and do not reflect weakening demand.
Day-to-day booking activity remains strong, with individual leisure travelers actively making reservations, and some guests currently in Oman choosing to extend their stays. Emteir believes that operators who uphold high service standards, clear communication, and flexible booking policies are better equipped to navigate uncertainties successfully.
Looking ahead, Emteir observed that Oman’s international promotional efforts are gaining traction, aided by increased visibility on social media platforms and endorsements from travel influencers and content creators who have recently visited the country. This growing interest in Oman’s natural landscapes, coastal attractions, deserts, mountains, and heritage could bolster a stronger tourism season, contingent on regional stability.
