How the Tamakkun Programme Empowers Omani Youth and SMEs: Enhancing Business Opportunities in Oman

MUSCAT, DEC 17 – The third edition of the Tamakkun Programme for Independent Freelancing has successfully concluded, showcasing the dedication and creativity of its participants in supporting Omani youth. Initiated by the Oman Youth Centre, this program aligns with a broader initiative to position youth as vital contributors to innovation and the development of the Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) sector, in accordance with Oman Vision 2040.

Alia bint Saeed Al Shanfari, Chief Executive Officer of the Oman Youth Centre, stated, “This program is one of our strategies aimed at empowering and enhancing the skills of the younger generation across various sectors.”

She further noted that the objective of the program is to help participants transform their competencies into productive projects. More than 265 young individuals took part in this initiative, with 50 participants reaching the final round and collectively generating over RO 32,000 in revenue.

Implemented in collaboration with over five SMEs and eight medium enterprise owners, freelancers, and productive families, the program underscores the Youth Centre’s commitment to driving significant social and economic impact.

Khamis bin Naser Al Shuaibi, Director General of Shared Services at Oman Oil Marketing Company, emphasized the role of innovation in development. “Innovation is not a cost but an essential tool for creating opportunities, adding value, and enhancing national competitiveness,” he remarked.

Al Shuaibi described Tamakkun as “a real-world example” that bridges the gap between innovation and the marketplace, talent and sustainability, as well as ambition and access to necessary tools. The program equips participants with skills in innovative thinking, project management, and business development, enabling them to nurture their projects into scalable business models.

The success stories of participants illustrate the programme’s impact. Nasira Al Maskari, a flower coordinator and owner of Zahra Flora, shared how the training transformed her life by equipping her with essential marketing and sales skills. “The training sessions significantly improved my abilities, allowing me to effectively showcase my portfolio on social media,” she stated.

Similarly, Jasim Al Habsi, Founder and CEO of Floostech, discussed how the programme has influenced his vision of achieving financial well-being for all. He described the intensive training with experts in sales, marketing, and project management as invaluable, emphasizing his goal to create a positive impact using his newfound expertise.

The Tamakkun Programme exemplifies the overarching goals of Oman Vision 2040, focusing on empowering and supporting SMEs as key drivers of economic growth and innovation. By providing young individuals with the tools and knowledge needed, it fosters an environment where ambition is complemented by capability, and creativity is paired with expertise. As programs like Tamakkun continue, Oman is ensuring that new innovators can turn their ideas into successful businesses, which are essential for shaping the country’s social and economic future.

The conclusion of the Tamakkun Programme highlights a significant opportunity for businesses in Oman to tap into a growing base of innovative young entrepreneurs. As these participants translate their skills into viable projects, investors should consider partnering with or supporting SMEs that emerge from such initiatives to foster economic diversification. However, the risks remain; businesses must stay agile to adapt to the evolving market dynamics driven by these new innovators.
