Mazoon Copper Project: How Environmental Sustainability Initiatives Could Boost Investment Opportunities in Oman

MUSCAT: Environmental sustainability is a central aspect of Oman’s largest copper mining initiative, the Mazoon Copper Project, as highlighted by Mattar bin Salim al Badi, CEO of Minerals Development Oman (MDO).

Located in Yanqul within the Al Dhahirah Governorate, the project, developed by MDO’s subsidiary Mazoon Mining, is anticipated to produce approximately 115,000 tonnes of 21.5% copper concentrate annually starting in 2027.

In an interview with Oman General Radio, Al Badi emphasized that environmental responsibility has been integral to the project’s design. “The Mazoon Project was built with environmental stewardship as a core principle. We’re implementing dry stacking, an environmentally friendly method for waste management, which significantly reduces water consumption and minimizes emissions. This approach strengthens investor confidence in Oman as a credible copper-exporting nation,” he stated.

Al Badi also noted that despite being the largest project in the Sultanate, it does not qualify as a large-scale venture by international standards. "While the Mazoon Copper Project is the largest in Oman regarding production and investment value, it is not considered large-scale globally," he remarked.

He underscored the strategic significance of the project, stating, “Its importance lies in positioning the Sultanate among nations that export this vital raw material. With copper being one of the essential minerals today, there is a global competition to mine it.”

Earlier this year, Mazoon Mining announced it had secured RO 104 million in funding from a consortium of local and regional banks, further bolstering the project’s financial foundation.
