Boosting Oil Production: How EOR Technologies Are Transforming Business Potential in Oman
MUSCAT: The Ministry of Energy and Minerals is enhancing the optimization of hydrocarbon resources by implementing advanced technologies and innovations aimed at increasing production efficiency and sustainability, all while adhering to rigorous health, safety, and environmental standards.
Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) has become a crucial component of this strategy, particularly in maximizing output from mature oil fields. These technologies facilitate additional extraction beyond conventional methods, thereby reinforcing long-term production stability.
Dr. Saleh bin Ali al Anbouri, Director General of Oil and Gas Exploration and Production, remarked that Oman has positioned itself as a global leader in EOR techniques, transforming geological complexities into opportunities for innovation and improved recovery rates. He highlighted that many fields discovered between the 1960s and 1980s face challenges such as reservoir heterogeneity and high oil viscosity.
To tackle these challenges, Oman has implemented advanced solutions based on comprehensive reservoir analysis and ongoing optimization of production techniques. A diverse range of EOR methods is currently employed across sandstone and carbonate reservoirs, including steam, gas, and polymer injection.
EOR’s contribution to total oil production is expected to increase to approximately 20 percent by 2026, up from 15 percent in 2021, emphasizing its growing strategic relevance. Over 680 million barrels have been produced through continuous steam injection, while polymer technologies have successfully improved fluid mobility and recovery efficiency.
Furthermore, advanced applications in complex carbonate reservoirs—such as steam-assisted gravity drainage and sour gas injection—have achieved incremental recovery gains of between 10 and 20 percent, underscoring the vast untapped potential in this area. — ONA
