Oman’s Upcoming MicroGEO Satellite by 2027: Implications for Business Growth and Investment Opportunities
MUSCAT: Oman’s MB Group has officially signed a strategic agreement with the US satellite company Astranis to launch the Sultanate’s inaugural dedicated MicroGEO communications satellite. This initiative, contracted under Astranis’ Block 3 launch with SpaceX, is anticipated to begin operations in early 2027.
This partnership is part of a broader investment plan valued at $200 million by MB Group, aimed at aligning with Oman Vision 2040. The investment encompasses ground stations and the necessary infrastructure to provide what the partners characterize as sovereign and secure connectivity for government entities, businesses, and communities.
The signing ceremony, held on January 26, was conducted under the auspices of Dr. Ali bin Amer al Shaithani, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology for Communications and Information Technology. At the event, Mahfouz Al Shaikh, Executive Vice-President, stated that the agreement signifies a significant advancement in establishing Oman’s satellite communications ecosystem and enhancing national digital infrastructure.
Al Shaikh emphasized that the initiative includes “sovereign safeguards” to ensure secure, dedicated satellite coverage, with services expected to launch by early 2027. He noted that the project aims to boost reliability through an integrated in-country ground station and distributed backup teleport stations, connecting to broader objectives such as driving digital economy growth, attracting investments, and creating quality job opportunities.
Usama al Barwani, Vice Chairperson of MB LLC, framed the agreement as a pivotal move in the group’s diversification into advanced technology sectors. He indicated that MB Group was seeking to tap into communications and AI-related opportunities, leveraging its existing industrial strengths in oil, gas, and mining. Barwani remarked that Astranis is a disruptive force in the space economy and that the group recognizes the strategic significance of advancing into next-generation connectivity solutions.
John Gedmark, co-founder and CEO of Astranis, articulated that the partnership would enhance sovereign connectivity in the region, starting with Oman. He portrayed the agreement as the foundation for a digital backbone essential for powering the economy, connecting communities, and fostering innovation in line with Oman Vision 2040.
During his remarks at the ceremony, Gedmark highlight the growing recognition of sovereign and secure communications as vital infrastructure. In an increasingly unpredictable global landscape, he noted, nations are placing a stronger emphasis on secure connectivity, which is essential for maintaining control and resilience akin to critical energy and transportation infrastructures.
Astranis specializes in manufacturing small geostationary communications satellites for high-orbit networks, offering dedicated, secure connectivity for enterprise and sovereign clients. Meanwhile, MB Group operates across more than 20 countries and has diverse business interests that include energy, mining, marine engineering, aviation, manufacturing, real estate, and strategic investments.
