Revolutionizing Dairy: Oman’s First Camel Cheese Processing Plant in Dhofar and Its Impact on Local Investments
MUSCAT: Construction of Oman’s first camel milk cheese processing plant is nearing completion in Rakhyout, Dhofar Governorate. This modestly scaled initiative has the potential to transform the lives of rural women by creating sustainable livelihoods for many households in the region.
Set to launch in the first quarter of this year, the facility represents the culmination of a multi-year collaboration among various Omani government entities and public and private organizations, with significant involvement from the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources and Al Jisr Foundation are among the supporting partners.
Initially, the plant will be capable of processing up to two tonnes of camel milk daily, with plans to gradually increase this capacity to five tonnes within the first year and ultimately to 15 tonnes.
The product line will include a variety of fresh and semi-hard cheeses, with future plans for hard cheese, condensed milk, milk desserts, and ice cream.
A key aspect of this project is its cooperative structure, which centers on a core group of 20 camel milk producers, all Omani women identified through the Omani Women’s Association in Shahab Asaib, Rakhyout. This initiative aims to stimulate a camel milk economy in Dhofar and promote the empowerment of rural communities across the governorate.
According to the FAO, “The facility is expected to serve as a foundation for a more inclusive and sustainable camel dairy industry, positioning rural women at the heart of production and innovation.”
The FAO has played an instrumental role in this initiative. Following an initial training on camel milk in 2022, a hands-on training session took place in July 2024, focusing on camel milk processing and cheese-making. This course enabled participants to produce a variety of higher-value products, marking a transition from raw milk provision to value-added processing.
This initiative aims for a comprehensive value-chain intervention to support the establishment of an Omani brand of camel-milk-based cheese products. Efforts include market assessments, feasibility studies, and the development of a milk collection network to integrate more farmers into the system once the facility is operational. An Omani brand for camel by-products is already 80% developed, with an expected launch in 2026.
Moreover, the project aligns with the core priorities of the International Year of the Woman Farmer (IYMF), to be celebrated globally in 2026. The FAO emphasized, “As Oman’s first specialized camel cheese processing unit approaches completion and women-led camel milk products near market entry, this initiative exemplifies a narrative worthy of global recognition during the IYMF. It is measurable, rooted in long-term partnerships, and showcases the real progress of rural women building skills, confidence, and leadership.”
