Comprehensive Summer Programs for 5,800 Omani Students: Boosting Creativity and Vocational Skills for Future Workforce Success
Muscat, July 5 – This summer, eight diverse summer programs, both local and international, have been launched across the provinces of Oman, organized by the Ministry of Education through the Career Guidance and Student Counseling Center. These programs aim to benefit over 5,800 students from various educational directorates and will run from June to August 2025.
The purpose of these programs is to create a supportive learning environment outside the classroom, enhance students’ skills, expand their knowledge, and familiarize them with their local communities, including tourist and geographical landmarks. Additionally, they work to build students’ self-awareness and professional identity, while promoting healthy, social, and psychological lifestyles to ensure their future academic and professional success.
According to Yaqoub bin Saif Al-Shahemi, Director General of the Career Guidance and Student Counseling Center, “These summer programs provide students with a non-traditional educational environment that develops their skills through interactive and enjoyable methods. They gain new experiences by tackling real-world challenges through collaborations between the Ministry of Education and various governmental and private sector entities.”
Among the notable summer programs is “Tawassul and Development”, which involves around 4,000 students from grades 5 to 11 across two different tracks. The first track targets students in grades 5-8 at summer centers in the provinces, while the second track, in collaboration with Outward Bound Oman, takes place in camps located in Jebel Akhdar and Jebel Ashur. This program aims to foster students’ skills and national values through educational and recreational activities.
Another key initiative is the “Future Leaders Camp” (third edition), which targets approximately 605 students from grades 7-9. It focuses on enhancing their creative thinking, technical skills, and entrepreneurship, in collaboration with the Public Authority for Small and Medium Enterprises Development across various provinces.
Additionally, the “Company Competition” and “Independent” programs are noteworthy. Approximately 36 students representing 12 student companies participate in the company program, which aims to evaluate student businesses that qualify for the finals of Injaz Oman, while enhancing entrepreneurial thinking and skills in marketing and planning. Conversely, the “Independent” program, the first of its kind, targets about 330 students from grades 10-12, aiming to help them discover individual skills and convert them into income through freelancing platforms, in collaboration with the Youth Center and the Public Authority for Small and Medium Enterprises Development.
The “Ma’arifa” program is conducted annually at a higher education institution, engaging around 100 students from the Oman Oil Company’s concession area. It focuses on enhancing students’ academic readiness and defining their future academic paths.
The “Enhancement” program is an international summer initiative, building on the “Ma’arifa” program, involving 25 students from the Oman Oil Company’s concession area. This program aims to refine students’ academic and linguistic skills through international educational experiences.
Moreover, the “My Specialty, My Profession” program targets 500 students, offering them a chance to experience university life while exploring academic specialties and related professions, in partnership with institutions such as the Vocational College, University of Technology and Applied Sciences, and the Military Technical College.
Lastly, the “Work Experience” program aims to train 273 students in actual work environments in collaboration with both the public and private sectors, helping them understand the demands of various professions and link them to future educational paths. This program is executed alongside several leading companies and institutions in Oman.
Importantly, the Career Guidance and Student Counseling Center also supports graduates of the General Education Diploma by preparing technical support centers across various educational directorates to assist graduates wishing to modify their study programs during the program modification period. This support aims to provide awareness and guidance from professional advisers and specialists, equipping students with necessary information to select and prioritize their academic specialties and university programs, in coordination with the Unified Admission Center at the Ministry of Higher Education, Research, and Innovation.
Special Analysis by Omanet | Navigate Oman’s Market
The launch of diverse summer programs targeting over 5,800 students in Oman presents a significant opportunity for businesses to engage with the youth market and contribute to workforce development. Investors and entrepreneurs should consider leveraging these initiatives by aligning their offerings with the skills being fostered, particularly in entrepreneurship and technology, ensuring they remain competitive in an evolving job market. However, with increased participation comes the risk of oversaturation in certain sectors; thus, strategic differentiation will be crucial for success.
