New Graphite Refinery in Al Buraimi: What This Pact Means for Oman’s Industrial Growth and Investment Opportunities
MUSCAT, March 13 — An agreement has been finalized to establish a significant graphite refining project in Al Buraimi Governorate, a move set to enhance Oman’s position as a global supplier of strategic materials for lithium-ion battery and energy storage industries.
The announcement was made by Australian critical minerals company Quantum Graphite Limited in a regulatory filing with the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) on March 13.
Quantum Graphite’s downstream technology partner, Sunlands Pure Group (SPG), has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Governorate of Al Buraimi to develop a large-scale graphite refinery and associated support facilities on a 240-hectare site in the region.
The MoU formalizes ongoing support from the Governorate and facilitates the accelerated development of the graphite refinery. This integrated facility will focus on graphite purification and packaging to serve international markets, including lithium-ion battery anodes, isostatic graphite, and thermal energy storage sectors. The agreement also designates Quantum Graphite as the exclusive supplier of flake graphite to SPG.
This development follows a unified investment contract signed last August for a dry battery manufacturing facility in Al Buraimi Industrial City, underscoring strong government backing, with Sayyid Dr. Hamad bin Ahmed Al Busaidy, Governor of Al Buraimi, present at the signing.
Adelaide-based Sunlands Pure Group, part of the Sunlands Energy conglomerate, specializes in purifying natural flake graphite to ultra-high purity levels of around 99.9% graphitic carbon, meeting the stringent requirements of high-performance industrial and energy applications.
The raw flake graphite for the Oman project will be sourced from Quantum Graphite’s Uley Graphite Project located southwest of Port Lincoln, South Australia. The Uley 2 project advances the century-old Uley mine, renowned as one of the world’s largest high-grade natural flake graphite deposits.
Importantly, the partnership between Sunlands and Quantum Graphite establishes an integrated value chain spanning mining, graphite purification, and advanced energy applications.
Additionally, SPG is progressing plans for a large-scale graphite purification facility in South Carolina, USA, expected to process approximately 100,000 tonnes of graphite annually and produce about 95,000 tonnes of high-purity products, including spherical graphite, to support lithium-ion battery supply chains, thermal energy storage technologies, and other advanced graphite manufacturing sectors.
