Bukaka Completes First Full BPU Refurbishment in Oman: Boosting Industrial Efficiency and Investment Opportunities
MUSCAT: Oman-based Bukaka International LLC has successfully completed the Sultanate’s first full refurbishment of beam pumping units (BPUs) carried out entirely by a local manufacturer, marking a significant advancement in Oman’s oilfield services sector.
The project encompassed C912 and C1280 BPU models from various international brands, highlighting Oman’s expanding technical capabilities to support mature upstream oil assets. Historically, such comprehensive refurbishments were outsourced abroad. This achievement reflects a shift towards greater operational self-reliance within the country.
Beam pumping units are critical to onshore oil production, especially in mature fields where artificial lift systems are essential for maintaining output. By localizing the entire refurbishment process—including inspection, disassembly, reconditioning, testing, and recommissioning—Oman is enhancing its ability to prolong equipment life and reduce operational costs.
Industry experts note that refurbishment offers significant financial and environmental advantages. Compared to full equipment replacement, refurbishment lowers capital expenditure, reduces turnaround time, and decreases the carbon footprint by extending the lifecycle of assets.
This development aligns with Oman’s In-Country Value (ICV) goals, which focus on increasing domestic industrial participation and technical skills in the energy sector. Conducting full refurbishment locally helps operators minimize logistical challenges, improve response times, and build local technical expertise.
Bukaka followed a detailed engineering-driven approach, starting with surveillance and inspection to evaluate the structural integrity and mechanical condition of the units. The process continued with systematic disassembly, component assessment, and cost evaluation before repairs were approved by clients.
Key components such as frame base assemblies, samson posts, walking beams, crank systems, gear reducers, and bearing assemblies underwent precision machining, welding, reconditioning, and part replacement when necessary. Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) ensured compliance with API and ISO standards, while Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) verified performance before installation and commissioning.
This rigorous methodology guarantees that refurbished units meet operational requirements and conform to international safety and reliability standards.
Bukaka’s Oman operation benefits from over 30 years of global expertise. Worldwide, the company has completed more than 1,500 BPU refurbishments and managed over 6,000 units through manufacturing, installation, maintenance, and lifecycle services. Bringing this know-how to Oman allows local operators to access comprehensive services without depending on overseas facilities.
As Oman continues to strengthen its upstream resilience and operational efficiency, the availability of standards-compliant, full-scope BPU refurbishment services within the country represents a strategic milestone in the development of its industrial ecosystem.
