Indigo’s Firm A350-900 Order: What It Means for Aviation Investment and Business Growth in Oman
New Delhi – IndiGo, India’s largest airline, has confirmed a firm order for 30 Airbus A350 aircraft, converting a previously signed Memorandum of Understanding from June into a binding agreement. This new commitment raises IndiGo’s total A350 orders to 60 planes.
This expanded order signifies a strategic shift as IndiGo prepares to enter the long-haul international market, utilizing the A350’s extended range and fuel efficiency to support its global growth ambitions.
Pieter Elbers, CEO of IndiGo, stated, “Today is a special day for IndiGo as we solidify our commitment to expanding our international footprint and offering unparalleled connectivity to our customers. The conversion of this MoU into a firm order for 30 additional A350-900s reflects our confidence in the future of Indian aviation and strengthens our partnership with Airbus. This step aligns with India’s vision of becoming a global aviation hub and IndiGo’s goal to emerge as a leading global aviation player by 2030.”
Elbers added, “As these aircraft join our fleet over the coming years, they will play a crucial role in enabling IndiGo to broaden its reach, connect India with more destinations worldwide, and offer enhanced international travel opportunities to our customers.”
Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, EVP Sales of the Commercial Aircraft division at Airbus, commented, “The A350’s unmatched fuel efficiency, range, and passenger comfort perfectly support IndiGo’s ambitious growth plans and long-haul network expansion. This milestone underscores our strong partnership with one of the fastest-growing airlines globally, and we eagerly anticipate supporting their foray into new long-haul markets.”
India, currently the world’s fastest-growing aviation market, is experiencing a rise in international travel fueled by economic growth and increasing household incomes. Airbus’s A350 is well-positioned to meet the country’s long-range travel aspirations. For over fifty years, Airbus has played a strategic role in India’s aviation growth, with the A320 Family aircraft facilitating the democratization of air travel domestically, while the A350 is set to unlock new international market potential for Indian carriers.
The A350 is recognized as the world’s most advanced and efficient widebody aircraft in the 300-410 seat category. Its cutting-edge technologies and aerodynamics deliver exceptional efficiency and passenger comfort. Featuring new-generation engines and lightweight materials, the A350 offers a 25% improvement in fuel consumption, operating costs, and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions compared to previous generation competitor aircraft.
Furthermore, like all Airbus models, the A350 currently can operate using up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Airbus aims for all its aircraft to be fully SAF-capable by 2030. As of the end of September 2025, the A350 had secured over 1,400 orders from 63 customers worldwide.
