Oman’s Green Hydrogen Ambitions: What This Means for Investors and Entrepreneurs in Renewable Energy
MUSCAT: The Ministry of Energy and Minerals has emphasized Oman’s expanding role in the global hydrogen economy through its active participation in the Asian Hydrogen Summit and Exhibition held in Sydney. Leading the delegation, Mohsin bin Hamad al Hadhrami, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Energy and Minerals, reaffirmed Oman’s commitment to the clean energy transition and its goal to become a prominent international center for green hydrogen.
In his keynote address, Al Hadhrami outlined Oman’s national strategy aimed at developing a large-scale hydrogen industry. He highlighted the country’s growing portfolio of green hydrogen projects, which are backed by agreements with leading local and international developers. He also detailed ongoing regulatory and investment reforms, including streamlined permitting processes, comprehensive infrastructure planning, and targeted incentives designed to attract worldwide investment.
The address emphasized the importance of international cooperation, global standards alignment, and the creation of hydrogen trade corridors to stimulate demand and accelerate sector growth. Al Hadhrami stressed that these factors are crucial for establishing a sustainable and competitive hydrogen economy.
On the sidelines of the summit, the Omani delegation engaged in high-level meetings with global institutions and companies to explore potential collaborations in project development, financing, and technical exchange. Discussions with the Australian government and the Australian Trade and Investment Commission offered insights into Australia’s ambitions to develop up to one gigawatt of green hydrogen capacity within the next three years, supported by funding from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA).
The delegation also met with Dr Fiona Simon, Chair of the Australian Hydrogen Council, to exchange perspectives on decarbonization pathways, regulatory frameworks, and expanding hydrogen applications across key industries.
Additionally, the delegation visited the Hysata headquarters and its Port Kembla facility, reviewing advancements in electrolysis technology and assessing the progress of pilot hydrogen projects, thereby fostering further technical collaboration opportunities.
Oman’s active role at the Asian Hydrogen Summit underscores its determination to forge strategic partnerships, attract investment, and build national capabilities. This participation strengthens Oman’s position as a global clean energy hub and supports its wider objectives for sustainable economic transformation.
