Oman’s Drive to Green Mobility and Low-Carbon Logistics: What Investors and Businesses Must Know

MUSCAT: Oman is intensifying its efforts to establish a sustainable transport ecosystem through a series of low-carbon mobility initiatives led by the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MoTCIT). These initiatives include expanding electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure, developing green fuels, and reducing maritime emissions, all integral to Oman’s broader ambition to become a regional leader in green logistics and clean technology.

Significant progress has been made in EV infrastructure, with over 160 public and private charging stations now operational across various governorates as of the third quarter of 2025. In addition, the Ministry introduced “Shahin,” the national EV charging app, enabling users to locate charging points, check real-time availability, and complete payments digitally. This expansion supports the increasing adoption of electric vehicles and aligns with Oman’s vision for sustainable urban mobility.

A historic milestone was reached in early 2025 with the launch of the Middle East’s first hydrogen production, supply, and distribution station, established in collaboration with Shell Oman. This station underpins the introduction of hydrogen-powered transport, with the first fleet of 15 light hydrogen vehicles already in operation. Further innovation includes a dual-combustion truck, capable of running on diesel and hydrogen, which was designed and built entirely by Omani experts and honored with the Excellence and Innovation Award at the 26th Gulf Engineering Forum.

In the maritime sector, MoTCIT is advancing decarbonization efforts through several projects. A concession agreement has been finalized to create the region’s first green ship recycling facility in Khatmat Malaha, adhering to international environmental and safety standards. SOHAR Port and Freezone has implemented a cold ironing system that supplies shore-side electricity to docked vessels, significantly cutting emissions during berthing. Additionally, a memorandum of understanding was signed with private partners to develop Oman’s inaugural integrated green methanol production facility, which will provide clean fuel to ships and accelerate the maritime industry’s decarbonization.

These initiatives underscore Oman’s commitment to the global clean energy transition while supporting national sustainability targets. The focus on hydrogen mobility, expanded EV infrastructure, green methanol production, ship electrification, and recycling capacities reflects a unified strategy to curb emissions across land and sea transport.

By advancing innovative green transport solutions and sustainable fuel options, Oman aims to build a cutting-edge, low-carbon logistics environment that enhances its international competitiveness and fulfills long-term environmental objectives. — ONA
