Nama PWP Launches RFQ Phase for Oman’s First Waste-to-Energy Project: Key Opportunities for Investors and Entrepreneurs
Muscat: As part of Oman’s strategic commitment to sustainable waste management and cleaner energy adoption, Nama Power and Water Procurement Company (PWP) has officially launched the Request for Qualification (RFQ) process for the nation’s inaugural utility-scale Waste-to-Energy (WTE) Project, situated in Barka.
This pioneering project, with an anticipated capacity of 95–100 MW and a Scheduled Commercial Operation Date (SCOD) targeted for the second quarter of 2031, marks a significant advancement in diversifying the country’s electricity fuel sources. The development is led by PWP, appointed by the Authority for Public Services Regulation, in close partnership with the Oman Environmental Services Holding Company (be’ah).
The WTE Project aligns with Oman’s national goals to efficiently reduce, treat, and manage waste while accelerating the transition to a low-carbon economy. It is expected to generate about 760 GWh of renewable energy annually from 2031 onwards, reinforcing Oman’s dedication to achieving its Net Zero emissions targets.
Ahmed bin Salim Al Abri, CEO of Nama Power and Water Procurement, highlighted the project’s significance: “The Waste-to-Energy project represents a strategic leap toward realizing Oman’s vision for sustainable energy and responsible waste management. We are proud to spearhead this groundbreaking initiative alongside be’ah and the Authority for Public Services Regulation. This project not only advances our Net Zero ambitions but also underscores our commitment to innovative, resilient power solutions for the Sultanate’s future.”
Abdullah Rashid Al Sawafi, Chief Energy Transition Officer at PWP, emphasized the WTE Project’s role in Oman’s energy evolution: “By employing advanced thermal conversion technologies, this project will safely and efficiently convert municipal solid waste into reliable baseload electricity. It will drastically reduce landfill waste and play a vital role in decarbonizing the power sector. Moreover, as a stable and dispatchable energy source, it will enhance grid reliability and facilitate the integration of variable renewable resources like solar and wind. This initiative exemplifies our dedication to environmentally responsible solutions that support Oman’s Net Zero goals and circular economy transition.”
PWP, the exclusive power procurer in Oman, invites qualified and experienced entities to submit their statements of qualification to participate in this transformative project. The RFQ launch is a critical step toward delivering innovative, clean, and efficient power that will contribute to a greener, more resilient energy future for communities across the Sultanate.
