Zero-Carbon Approach to Drive Sustainability: What It Means for Business Growth and Investment Opportunities in Oman
MUSCAT — Guided by a zero-carbon vision, the Sultanate of Oman is making significant progress in environmental and climate mitigation initiatives aimed at resource preservation and sustainable development.
The Ministry of Economy reports that Oman ranks 55th worldwide on the Environmental Performance Index. The country is home to 32 nature reserves, has planted 10.8 million trees, and protects 17,839 square kilometers of natural areas. Over the past five years, 589 environmental projects have been implemented. Oman’s rich biodiversity includes more than 1,200 plant species, over 518 bird species, and upwards of 988 fish species.
Dr. Abdullah bin Ali Al Amri, Chairman of the Environment Authority, highlighted key achievements during the Tenth Five-Year Plan (2021-2025) that demonstrate Oman’s dedication to environmental conservation and sustainability. Speaking at the recent annual media briefing, he noted the enactment of 21 environmental regulations, the prosecution of 342 cases against violators, and strong compliance with penalties at 82%. The Authority also achieved a 99.2% response rate to pollution reports, while technology adoption for environmental monitoring reached 87%.
Oman’s ambitious environmental initiatives align with Oman Vision 2040, supporting the circular economy, biodiversity protection, and carbon neutrality goals. A flagship project, the Blue Carbon initiative, targets planting 100 million mangrove trees to absorb 14 million tonnes of carbon dioxide, with 1.5 million trees planted so far. In urban sustainability, the “Rozna” system has been launched to assess buildings—residential, commercial, and governmental—using standards for thermal insulation, energy efficiency, and eco-friendly materials.
The Sultanate is also advancing renewable energy and emissions reduction through solar power projects, utilization of associated gas in place of flaring, development of wetlands like the Nimr Wetland Project, and solar-powered oil production operations. Waste management efforts focus on recycling construction debris, converting green waste into fertilizer, and treating industrial and medical waste.
These initiatives collectively underscore Oman’s strong commitment to achieving a sustainable balance across environmental, economic, and social dimensions.
