National Employment Policy Survey Launched: Implications for Business Growth and Workforce Development in Oman

Muscat: The Ministry of Labour conducted a survey workshop aimed at achieving the targets outlined in Oman Vision 2040 and developing the National Employment Policy. The event took place at the Crowne Plaza in Madinat Irfan on Thursday, focusing on assessing the needs of the private sector labor market.

Patronized by Dr. Mahad bin Saeed Baouin, the Minister of Labour, this workshop represents the first of its kind in Oman. It was implemented under the supervision of the National Center for Statistics and Information (NCSI) and with support from experts at the International Labour Organisation.

The survey utilized scientifically recognized methodologies, including a three-dimensional stratified sampling technique, to appropriately represent data from approximately 3,000 establishments in the labor market.

In an interview with the Observer, Abdullah bin Murad al Malahi, Assistant Director General for Planning Affairs, explained that the survey focuses on private sector establishments employing workers for wages. He noted that such surveys are a common practice in many countries, following recommendations from the 19th International Labour Organisation Conference on Labour Statistics.

The recent survey workshop by the Ministry of Labour signals a pivotal step toward aligning Oman’s workforce with the goals of Vision 2040, emphasizing the need for skilled labor in the private sector. This presents opportunities for businesses to tailor their workforce strategies to meet emerging demands, but also risks associated with potential skills mismatches if they fail to adapt. Smart investors and entrepreneurs should closely monitor the evolving labor landscape and consider investing in training programs to cultivate the skillsets required for future growth.
