Revolutionizing Traffic Management: How New AI-Powered Cameras Will Impact Business Operations in Oman
MUSCAT: The Royal Oman Police (ROP) is enhancing its traffic surveillance capabilities through the installation of more AI-powered cameras aimed at detecting seat belt violations, speeding, and various other traffic infractions. This initiative seeks to modernize traffic monitoring infrastructure, employing advanced technology to simultaneously identify and penalize multiple violations.
In an interview with the Observer, a spokesperson from the Traffic Department explained that these systems incorporate Artificial Intelligence and 4D radar technology, enabling them to recognize violations without human oversight, even in low-light conditions. Currently in the installation phase, these smart cameras have undergone trial operations over the past few months and will be activated incrementally to address increasing accident rates.
“The AI-enabled cameras can simultaneously detect multiple violations. For example, while one camera may identify speeding, another can check if passengers are buckled up, if the driver is using a mobile phone, or if the vehicle is tailgating,” the official stated. Specific details about the system’s full deployment will be kept confidential, although a video showcasing the technology will be made public prior to full activation.
These cameras are strategically being placed on major highways and at critical traffic signal intersections throughout Muscat. Equipped with a comprehensive notification system for fines, the cameras can alert vehicle owners in real-time if they are found violating regulations, such as texting while driving or not wearing seatbelts.
Additionally, the advanced systems are capable of verifying vehicle insurance status, providing authorities with up-to-date information on violations and enabling immediate action against offenders.
The high-tech cameras being integrated into the highway system will feature a standard speed limit buffer of 20 km/h. Penalties for speeding start at RO 20, with fines ranging from RO 35 to RO 50 for exceeding the speed limit by 50 to 80 km/h.
