Human Trafficking Warnings: How Fake Job Ads and Visa Misuse Could Impact Your Business Practices in Oman

On the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, the Royal Oman Police (ROP) urged the public to report any suspicious activities or violations that may lead to exploitation. The ROP highlighted the importance of clear and formal employment contracts to safeguard the rights of both employers and employees.

Brigadier Jamal bin Habib al Quraishi, Director General of Criminal Investigations and Research, noted that traffickers often use deceptive job advertisements to lure women abroad to work in Oman. These tactics frequently result in the confiscation of their documents, restricting their freedom, and subjecting them to immoral and unethical practices.

Among the recurring illegal methods identified, some employers confiscate workers’ passports or identification documents without their consent. Others recruit workers on family visit or tourist visas, employing them in violation of labor and residency laws. In certain cases, these employers require workers to cover the costs of their visas and travel, forcing them into onerous work conditions to repay these debts.

Recent Cases

  • July 28: South Sharqiyah Governorate Police Command arrested 18 women of Asian nationality in the Wilayat of Sur for violating the Labor Law and Foreigners’ Residence Law.

  • July 24: The Al Wusta Police Command detained 9 Ethiopian nationals in the Wilayat of Mahout for illegal entry and violations of labor laws.

  • July 20: The Police Command in Muscat arrested 30 individuals, including 21 women of various Asian nationalities, for acts contrary to public decency in a hotel in the Wilayat of Matrah.

  • July 15: South Al Batinah Governorate Police arrested 2 Asian men and 10 Asian women for similar offenses in residential apartments in Rustaq, Barka, and Al Musannah.

Brigadier al Quraishi also reported the capture of a suspect wanted by Italian authorities, who had formed a criminal organization involved in human trafficking and migrant smuggling to several European countries. His extradition was facilitated under international protocols, receiving broad acclaim worldwide.
