Surge in Household and Vehicle Fires in Oman 2024: Implications for Insurance and Safety Businesses

Muscat: The number of fire incidents in Oman has seen a notable increase over the past three years. According to the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI), there were 4,955 fire incidents reported in 2024, which marks an increase from 4,622 in 2023 and 4,186 in 2022.

In 2024, Muscat reported 1,577 fire incidents, followed by 1,095 in North Al Batinah, 469 in South Al Batinah, and 401 in Dhofar. Each of these governorates experienced a rise in incidents compared to previous years.

The data reveals that the majority of fires occurred in housing facilities, with 1,530 reports, followed by transportation (1,070), agricultural areas (409), and incidents involving equipment and power lines (314). Notably, fires in housing facilities surged by 30.8%, while those related to transportation increased by 21.8%.

In light of these incidents, the Civil Defence and Ambulance Authority (CDAA) emphasizes the importance of regular vehicle maintenance. Drivers are advised to have a handheld fire extinguisher and first aid kit readily available, which should be checked for validity. Additionally, dangerous items such as batteries, gas cylinders, and hand sanitizers should never be left inside vehicles.

The primary causes of vehicle fires include inadequate maintenance, electrical issues due to faulty wiring, fuel leaks near ignition sources, and engine overheating, often exacerbated by the use of substandard or improperly installed parts. Drivers are also encouraged to avoid using their vehicles during the hottest parts of the day, particularly in the summer months.

The rising trend in fire incidents, particularly in residential and transportation sectors, presents both challenges and opportunities for businesses in Oman. Companies in safety equipment and vehicle maintenance industries may find growing demand for their services, while investors should account for increased insurance costs and regulatory scrutiny related to fire safety measures. Entrepreneurs should consider innovative solutions in fire prevention and public awareness campaigns as a strategic response to these pressing safety concerns.
