Traffic Safety Crisis in Oman: How Rising Accidents Impact Businesses and Investment Opportunities

Muscat: In 2024, the Sultanate of Oman experienced 586 fatalities resulting from 1,854 road accidents, which also led to 1,936 injuries, according to the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI). Among the deceased were 235 male drivers, 125 male passengers, and 131 male pedestrians.

These figures are concerning, particularly given Oman’s reputation for having one of the best road networks globally and strict traffic penalties enforced by the Royal Oman Police (ROP). The World Economic Forum’s 2024 World Population Review ranked Oman eighth in the world and second in the Arab region for road quality. Travel advisories from various countries note: "Oman’s roads are good, but caution is advised due to potential flooding during the rainy season."

Accident Causes

The majority of accidents were caused by vehicle collisions (806), run-overs (389), and crashes involving fixed objects (338). Among women, the casualties included 17 drivers, 50 passengers, and 28 pedestrians. In total, 293 expatriates lost their lives in 2024—215 males and 78 females—compared to 276 Omani males and 17 females.

Year-to-Year Comparisons

In comparison to previous years, the statistics show a slight decline: 586 deaths and 1,936 injuries from 1,854 accidents in 2024, down from 595 deaths and 2,129 injuries from 2,040 accidents in 2023, and 532 deaths from 2,080 injuries in 2022. Major factors contributing to fatalities include speed, negligence, risky behavior, fatigue, overtaking, intoxication, inadequate safe distances, and vehicle defects.

Behavioral Issues

Notably, poor behavior accounted for 99 fatalities in 2024, up from 80 in 2023 and 63 in 2022. In response, the ROP has initiated the expansion of smart systems to monitor traffic violations, particularly focusing on mobile phone usage while driving. These advanced camera systems utilize artificial intelligence to analyze images and pinpoint violations without human intervention, enhancing traffic oversight and identifying congested areas.

Investment in Infrastructure

The critical role of the road network in Oman’s diverse terrain is underscored by the 2025 General Budget, which allocates RO 900 million for development projects within civil ministries and government units. This includes a significant 36% earmarked for infrastructure projects. Key undertakings slated for completion this year encompass the Khasab-Dibba-Lima Road, Al Sharqiyah Expressway, Adam-Thamrait Road, and the Ansab-Jafnain dualisation project. Additionally, the expansion of the Muscat Expressway will begin this year, adding three lanes in each direction, ultimately creating the widest road in Oman with a total of 12 lanes.

The recent data on road accidents in Oman highlights urgent challenges for businesses, particularly those in logistics and transportation, who must prioritize safety to mitigate risks and potential liabilities. The growing investment in infrastructure, with RO 900 million allocated for development projects, presents significant opportunities for construction and engineering firms to engage in vital road projects, while also prompting smart investors to focus on technologies that enhance traffic safety and monitoring systems. As the Royal Oman Police expands its use of smart systems, businesses should consider aligning with these advancements to improve operational efficiency and public safety.
