Scammers Impersonate Officials via Video Calls: How This Affects Business Security in Oman

Muscat: The Royal Oman Police (ROP) has issued a warning to the public about fraudulent individuals using video communication platforms to impersonate official figures and government employees in an effort to deceive citizens and residents.

In its advisory, ROP explained that scammers frequently pose as police officers or government officials during video calls. They utilize fake visuals and names to create a convincing façade. These impersonators often request sensitive personal or financial information, claiming it is necessary for identity verification or legal matters, and may even threaten targets with fabricated legal consequences for non-compliance.

The ROP emphasized the importance of verifying the identity of any caller through official channels before responding to such requests. The advisory called on the public to remain vigilant and avoid disclosing personal information or documents unless they are sure of the legitimacy of the communication.

“Protecting your information is a shared responsibility,” the advisory noted, underscoring the increasing sophistication of online fraud schemes aimed at unwary individuals.

Additionally, the police reaffirmed their commitment to combating cybercrime and encouraged anyone encountering suspicious calls or messages to report them immediately through official communication channels.
