Seminar on Media and National Identity: Implications for Cultural Investment in Oman
Muscat, July 8 — The Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Youth organized a dialogue seminar today focused on media and national identity, emphasizing the importance of national identity as one of the key components of the existence of nations and peoples.
During the seminar, held at the Literary Forum and moderated by Badrya Al-Amriya, Director of the Department of Communication and Media at the ministry, Dr. Mohammed bin Awad Al-Mashikhi, an academic and researcher specializing in public opinion and mass communication, stated that the loss of national identity can lead to the fragmentation of individuals and communities, making them vulnerable to foreign cultural influences. He noted that in the face of globalization and modern technology, national identity faces significant challenges, as digital media has facilitated the spread of Western cultures and ideas that can weaken individuals’ pride in their identity.
Dr. Al-Mashikhi emphasized the need for a clear media strategy aimed at promoting national identity through the production of visual content that aligns with Oman’s religious and cultural values. He highlighted the importance of supporting educational and research institutions to enhance cultural and social awareness within the community to protect this cultural heritage from contemporary challenges.
