Oman Botanic Garden Handed Over to Muscat Municipality: What This Means for Local Business and Investment Opportunities
The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism (MHT) has officially transferred the Oman Botanic Garden project to the Muscat Municipality.
This project is recognized as one of the rarest gardens worldwide due to its vast size and its integration of geographical and botanical diversity with educational and tourism purposes.
The Oman Botanic Garden holds significant importance for tourism, scientific research, and heritage preservation. It showcases a wide variety of native plants and trees from Oman’s diverse natural environments within a unified space. This strategic initiative aims to protect the Sultanate’s unique plant biodiversity and raise public awareness about environmental conservation. Additionally, it is expected to become a major hub for eco-tourism and environmental education in the region.
Scientifically, the garden functions as a living archive and data repository, having documented and collected hundreds of native plant species, including 20 species that are endemic exclusively to Oman.
To enhance accessibility, Muscat Municipality has inaugurated a 1.4 km dual carriageway on Al Khoud Village Road. The new road features two lanes in each direction, pedestrian sidewalks, and upgraded facilities to facilitate smooth traffic flow to the Oman Botanic Garden.
Located approximately 35 km from Muscat International Airport, the garden is designed to replicate natural habitats that represent Oman’s rich botanical heritage. It will serve as a comprehensive destination for research, education, recreation, professional interaction, and an exceptional visitor experience. Among its notable features is Oman’s first cable car ride, alongside open playgrounds, event spaces, and interactive zones. The entire project emphasizes sustainability in its design, construction, and operations.
A key element of the garden is its nursery, spanning 20,000 square meters, which provides all necessary plants for the garden. The nursery includes three covered glasshouses, four greenhouses, shaded areas, and open spaces, supporting the garden’s continuous development and maintenance.
This landmark project marks a significant advancement in preserving Oman’s natural heritage while promoting environmental stewardship and sustainable tourism.
