Star Park Launch in Jabel Shams: Boosting Scientific Tourism and Investment Opportunities in Oman

The Environment Authority has recently signed an agreement with the Omani Society for Astronomy and Space (OSAS) to develop the Star Park project in Jebel Shams, Al Hamra. This initiative will feature a permanent astronomical and environmental camp dedicated to scientific tourism.

Ali bin Amer Al Shaibani, a board member of OSAS, described the project as the region’s first community-based astronomical and environmental venture. He highlighted that the project is the result of extensive efforts, including over 15 site visits, detailed technical and financial studies, and designs inspired by Oman’s natural environment. Additionally, a comprehensive long-term sustainability plan has been formulated.

Al Shaibani emphasized that this milestone represents a significant national achievement by promoting scientific tourism, fostering innovation in astronomy and environmental fields, and encouraging youth to engage in knowledge and practical experience. He stressed that Oman’s mountainous terrain offers a valuable platform for pioneering scientific and tourism initiatives.

The Star Park is set to become an international hub for both tourism and science, hosting a wide range of programs such as awareness campaigns, workshops, astronomical observation nights, and scientific lectures. It will also serve as a venue to showcase the work of both amateur and professional astronomers.

The architectural design of the project aligns closely with the environmental character of the site. The exterior draws inspiration from the juniper tree, a rare and endangered species native to the Western Hajar Mountains.

Located within the Western Hajar Starlight Reserve in Jebel Shams, Al Dakhiliyah Governorate, the site offers breathtaking views, a temperate summer climate, cool winters, and exceptional nighttime visibility of the Milky Way, making it an ideal location for this unique scientific and tourism endeavor.

For investors and entrepreneurs, this initiative signals potential in developing complementary services such as eco-friendly accommodations, local artisanal products, and experiential tourism activities, while aligning with Oman’s strategic emphasis on innovation and environmental conservation offers a competitive edge. However, care must be taken to maintain strict environmental stewardship to protect the site’s delicate ecosystem and ensure long-term sustainability.
